our story…
In the spring of 2000, a life-long dream came true when I opened my first shop in a tiny storefront in downtown Savannah. Within three years we had outgrown that little store and the search for a larger location began. I settled on a centrally located space with more visibility and foot traffic. After spending three years in the second location, we found ourselves once again craving more space. As luck would have it we found an enormous turn of the century storefront on Savannah’s premier shopping street. Our current location opened in October of 2007. As a creative person I love the challenge of redesigning a new space but after two moves I hope to never move the store again.

“A bohemian lifestyle and mentality is all about recycling, re-using, re-purposing and reviving the old fashioned into the new thing to do or have! We’re trendsetters! Am I right? Am I right? Who’s with me? Yep… we are. Look around you! Boho minded folks have always lived with old suitcases in their houses, vintage furnishings and retro, rotary phones. Let’s face it. They don’t succumb to the technology advances of their day (unless it helps them to get their bohemian inspired ideas out there…”
At Dwell, we’re staging a minor revolution. We think that it’s possible to live in a house or apartment by a bold modern architect, to own furniture and products that are exceptionally well designed, and still be a regular human being. We think that good design is an integral part of real life. And that real life has been conspicuous by its absence in most design and architecture magazines.
We understand the impulse, the desire to show rooms that are insanely perfect. There is something compelling about an empty room or a house in which no one has lived. Something virginal. It would be an awesome responsibility to be the first one through that door. Perfection is intimidating. You have to be on your best behavior to live with it.
By contrast, we want to demonstrate that a modern house is a comfortable one. That today’s best architects are able to fashion environments that are at once of the moment and welcoming. And the only way we know to demonstrate that a home is truly livable is to show it as it is lived in. If a photograph in this magazine includes a fruit bowl, it’s there because the homeowners eat fruit.
The Frugal and Simple Life Blog

“It’s been such a stressful past few weeks that I am in serious need of de-compression time. Opening an antiques shop has been a dream and goal of mine for years, but the reality of the process is exhausting. Of course, I did not expect it to be easy, by any means. But, wow… it has been tiring. But, worth it, to say the very least. : ) So… what should a simple, frugal (I try to be anyway) gal do to de-compress?? I think I will go for a long walk (alone) today. Yes… that sounds like a good plan”

Greg Stones Watercolor Paintings

Penguin in Love by Greg Stones
“When I first started out, I painted lonely self-portraits, landscapes, and animals. I was strictly a nostalgic and technical artist. Not to mention an isolated artist who rarely did anything more exciting than watch cartoons and nap. And possibly eat pasta.
At some point along the way, I remembered that I had wanted to be a cartoonist when I was in college, and I started tossing a little humor into the paintings. Flying people? Hungry sharks? Nude blue alien women getting picked up by UFOs? You bet. And for reasons that I cannot explain, meeting the stunning woman who would become my wife somehow led to the addition of penguins, robots, zombies, flashers, and poop. In fact, these elements have become such a dominant part of my work that people are actually shocked and horrified when I resort to my old ways and create a landscape where no pooping penguins are killed by topless robotic zombies. It’s pretty cool.

“Sometimes a film location can be so fantastic it can make a so-so flick a pleasure to watch. Ideally we’d love a thought-provoking plotline but for us, a dreamy home can be just as much of an escape. A stunning location, cutting-edge architecture, and perhaps a handsome homeowner—we have enough to write our own fairytale. Though no matter how much of a role houses plays in film, they’re the only stars that don’t make it into the opening credits. In their honor, we’ve gathered the most inspiring, breathtaking, fantasy-inducing homes of the movies. Drum roll please…”
